Overfishing
You may not think it, but overfishing is a major global problem. Due to new technologies such as sonar, fish do not stand a chance. Fishing vessels can find, catch, and in some cases even can right on the ship. Overfishing destroys marine ecosystems, and entire industries. Entire fishing villages' economies have collapsed because there are simply no more fish to catch. This puts many people out of work and ruins ways of life. Some areas were so over fished that it will take centuries for the fish population to return to a moderate level. A major problem with fishing today is the destruction of the bycatch. That means that if a fishing vessel catches fish that are not in its market, then those fish are simply killed and thrown back into the ocean. To help with the problem of overfishing, new technologies should be invented to limit the amount of bycatch, and catch limits should be set for specific fish in ecosystems that are on the verge of collapsing.
