Endangered Animal - Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus)

A new featured endangered animal will be posted every 7 posts. This is for archive purposes, so readers like yourself will be able to look up and read about any previous or perhaps missed endangered animals that have been featured. The featured endangered animal series will also retain its spot on the right column of the home page.

Ursus maritimus commonly known as the Polar bear lives in the Arctic, and its status is vulnerable. The Polar bear population is estimated to be from 20,000 to 25,000. There is expected to be a population reduction of at least 30% over the next 45 years because of habitat loss and a decline in habitat quality. Habitat loss is a direct result of the global climate change which is causing the Arctic sea ice to melt.
